VI. Theatre and Reality
Julia Lambert, a famous actress, is talking with her son Roger.
'What is it you want?'
'Reality.'
'What do you mean?'
'You see, I've lived all my life in an atmosphere of make-believe. I want to get down to brass tacks. You and father are all right breathing this air, it's the only air you know and you think it's the air of heaven. It stifles me.'
Julia listened to him attentively, trying to understand what he meant.
'We’re actors, and successful ones. That's why we've been able to surround you with every luxury since you were born. You could count on the fingers of one hand the actors who've sent their son to Eton.'
'I'm very grateful for all you've done for me.'
'Then what are you reproaching us for?'
'I'm not reproaching you. You've done everything you could for me. Unfortunately for me you've taken away my belief in everything.'
'We've never interfered with your beliefs. I know we're not religious people, we're actors, and after eight performances a week one wants one's Sundays to oneself. I naturally expected they'd see to all that at school.'
He hesitated a little before he spoke again. One might have thought that he had to make a slight effort over himself to continue.
'When I was just a kid, I was fourteen. I was standing one night in the wings watching you act. it must have been a pretty good scene, you said the things you had to say so sincerely, and what you were saying was so moving, I couldn't help crying. I was all worked up. I don't know how to say it quite, I was uplifted; I felt terribly sorry for you, I felt a bloody little hero; I felt I'd never do anything again that was beastly or underhand. And then you had to come to the back of the stage, near where I was standing, the tears were streaming down your face; you stood with your back to the audience and in your ordinary voice you said to the stage manager: what the bloody hell is that electrician doing with the lights? I told him to leave out the blue. And then in the same breath you turned round and faced the audience with a great cry of anguish and went on with the scene.'
'But, darling, that was acting. If an actress felt the emotions she represented she'd tear herself to pieces. I remember the scene well. It used to bring down the house. I've never heard such applause in my life.'
'I suppose I was a fool to be taken in by it. I believed you meant what you said. When I saw that it was all pretence it smashed something. I've never believed in you since. I'd been made a fool of once; I made up my mind that I wouldn't ever be made a fool of again.'
She gave him her delightful and disarming smile.
'Darling, I think you're talking nonsense.'
'Of course you do. You don't know the difference between truth and make-believe. You never stop acting. It's second nature to you. You act when there's a party here. You act to the servants, you act to father, you act to me. To me you act the part of the fond, indulgent, celebrated mother. You don't exist, you're only the innumerable parts you've played. I've often wondered if there was ever a you or if you were never anything more than a vehicle for all these other people that you've pretended to be. When I've seen you go into an empty room I've sometimes wanted to open the door suddenly. but I've been afraid to in case I found nobody there.'
She looked up at him quickly. She shivered, for what he said gave her an eerie sensation. She listened to him attentively, with a certain anxiety, for he was so serious that she felt he was expressing something that had burdened him for years. She had never in his whole life heard him talk so much.
'D'you think I'm only sham?'
'Not quite. Because sham is all you are. Sham is your truth. Just as margarine is butter to people who don't know  what butter is.'
'You're hard,' she said plaintively. 'Don't you love me?'
'I might if I could find you. But where are you? If one stripped you of your exhibitionism, if one took your technique away from you, if one peeled you as one peels an onion of skin after skin of pretence and insincerity, of tags of old parts and shreds of faked emotions, would one come upon  a soul at last?' He looked at her with his grave sad eyes and then he smiled a little. 'I like you all right.'
'Do you believe I love you?'
'In your way.'
Julia's face was suddenly discomposed.
'If you only knew the agony I suffered when you were ill! I don't know what I should have done if you'd died!'
'You would have given a beautiful performance of a bereaved mother at the bier of her only child.'
'Not nearly such a good performance as if I'd had the opportunity of rehearsing it a few times,' Julia answered tartly. 'You see, what you don't understand is that acting isn't nature; it's art, and art is something you create. Real grief is ugly; the business of the actor is to represent it not only with truth but with beauty. If I were really dying as I've died in half a dozen plays, d'you think I'd care whether my gestures were graceful and my faltering words distinct enough to carry to the last row of the gallery? If it's a sham it's no more a sham than a sonata of Beethoven's, and I'm no more of a sham than the pianist who plays it.

  1. At present there is no doubt that Theatre may take away people’s belief in everything, though that problem is rather controversial.

We can face that problem in the extract from the novel ‘’Theater’’ by W.S. Maugham. According the dialogue between Julia, a famous actress, and her son Roger, we can understand that he thinks that his mother didn’t know the difference between truth and make-believe. She never stops acting and that artificiality is her second nature. On one hand, a lot of people would agree with Roger, because today actors and actresses are usually grown into their parts in a real life. They are mixed their theatrical emotions with their real. In my personal opinion, I have never met such people, that is why I cannot be fully agree with it.
However, there are more people, who understand that Theatre would always be Theatre with its emotions and feelings, green-room gossips and with all that make-believe on the stage, which makes us to feel the reality. It is natural for actors to act according their roles, of course, only in Theatre. That is why my attitude to that particular question is clear, I am sure that acting on the stage must be acting, but in real life you must be real too.

In conclusion I would like to say that I agree with the Julia’s words that acting is not nature, it is art, and art it is something you create, and the business of the actor is to represent it not only with truth but with beauty. That is the kind of a beautiful artificiality, which would bring down the house. That is a real Theatre.

  2. The problem of reality in the life and pretence during performance on the stage is rather controversial among actors. It`s clear that actors should distinguish between their life and acting. But there is one point I`d like to make that not everybody can do it. I was thinking you might be interested in this topic. So, do you consider that the real life of actors is sham?

There are a lot of famous actors that have such a huge imagination that they don’t see the stage as a stage but as an imaginary world. They try to grow into the role. But after their acting they returned into their real life.

But on the other hand, there are some actors, who doesn`t know the difference between truth and make-believe. They never stop acting. It`s second nature to them. They can`t come back from their role.

All in all, in my opinion, despite the fact that the actor should perform various parts of different people on the stage he must stay a real person in his life without pretense.

  3. Nowadays we live in the world where the level of acting in theatre is extremely realistic. And because of that we have a rather controversial problem of being who you are on the stage and acting in the real life.
There are a lot of people like Roger who doesn’t like behavior. He thought that his mother also playing in her life , like it’s performance. And it could be a problem if someone began to play a role , not to act themselves.
From another point of view which I support , if an actor or actresses is a real genius in acting, they must lived theirs roles, and this formed themselves. They are just too emotional for a simple person.
In conclusion I would like to say that we haven’t the right side in this problem , but as for me I would like to say that if someone “acting” it’s good , because he or she colour our life

  4. It goes without saying that theatre can not exist without real theatrical emotions. Sometimes people think that actors or actress can not stop to act out of the stage.

Such problem is raised in the dialog between Julia and her son Roger. After one situation from his childhood the boy thought that his mother was only the innumerable parts she had played. She acted the whole her life. He believed she had never been herself . Nowadays ,of course, some actors or actress continue to act in a real life . They live a part very strong and then they forget where they are. However, his mother , a famous actress, was trying to convince him otherwise. She said that acting was not nature,it’s art which people created. I suppose acting has to be on the stage ,you must be real in the life .

In conclusion,I would to say that I agree with Julia because actor has to show real emotions on the stage to convey some feelings of the hero . It is the sense of the theatre ,it shows genuine emotions which see in real life. It is not important what way you do some things, the most main thing what you have in your soul at this moment.

  6. Nowadays theatre is an integral part of our daily life. Certainly, the problem of theatre and reality is rather controversial.

This issue is raised in the dialogue between Julia and her son. On the one hand, good acting let us feel as if we were in a real life. Actors have ascendancy over audience. They can control people's emotions, influence on their feelings. It's clear, that the audience can simply identify the false acting. That's why, actors try grow into the role. But on the other hand, it's tricky for actors not to lose themselves. They should separate real and artificial life. Unfortunately, sometimes it's very difficult especially for their family to understand their real emotions. Moreover, it's a hard work when you go the boards and you have to push your feelings under the rug.

In conclusion, I'd like to say, that all of us maybe even unconsciously play different roles during our lives. But the main thing is to remain themselves.

  7. Theater is the most remarkable and essential art of life. And the problem which is raised in this text is connected with acting on the stage and staying ourselves in an ordinary life. It`s a rather controversial question because, on the one hand, it`s easy to disappear in a role, but on the other, it`s vital to act true to life. So, do you consider acting in a real life to be a common thing for actors?
Speaking about me, I absolutely agree that actors have to stay themselves in a real life. Being a performer of a false reality, actor moves from one project to another, from one role to another. Each project is different. An actor is given a script to memorize. His role is a necessary function to the story telling process and that isn't his true character or personality otherwise it would be an autobiography.
Of cause, there is an opinion, that we can`t trust actors in a real life because they can easily fake their emotions and thoughts. But I suppose that` s quiet impossible to stay “an actor” in reality. We have no scripts. We have no directors. We are alone to solve our problems and to communicate with the rest of the world.
As a result, the actor is not the part of a real life but he or she is a magician capable of summoning other selves.

  8. No doubts that any profession influences a person in one or another way. The matter is how powerful its influence. What can we say about actors, for instance? Can we state that sometimes people of this profession forget about the verge between acting and reality? Can we say that limits disappear?
There is no doubt that many people would say that actors always seem to be very vivid, charismatic and attention-getting. «That is such a profession» - they would probably remark and continue admiring. But not many of us have ever thought about the verge of this work. Where it starts and where it finishes. Is that possible that an actress returns home and starts playing two or three more roles there: a loving and caring mother, a good housewife or an appreciating wife.
Let’s take for example Julia Lambert , a famous actress whose son Roger once said to his mother: «You don't know the difference between truth and make-believe. You never stop acting». The conversation shows the boy’s suffering and hurt feelings. Roger had lived all his life in his mother’s theatre where Julia acted to everyone, to the guests, to the servants, to father, to her son finally. «You don't exist, you're only the innumerable parts you've played.» - the boy said. Is it not an answer? The verge just disappears.

In conclusion the great lines should be mentioned in my opinion: "All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players..." . Especially good players are those who know what the stage is, who know how to act, who live playing. But exactly these people lose the most important roles forgetting about the reality.
