  1. 6. - Things only existed when attention was paid to them. A bit like music.
I can’t be fully agree with that statement. I think that it is impossible not to notice things which are around you, because if we can touch or feel them, so how can they do not exist then or exist only if we pay attention to them. But what is for music, I can tell that some kind of music can exist really when we listen to it. I can’t find many people now, for example, who listen to Jaz-music, so I can say that Jaz exists only where it is listened. And there Catherine thoughts help to prove my idea and she said that there is a room even if there were no one inside.

    - The condiments of the season.
As I could understand that means the gifts which Catherine’s father gave her when she and her mother met him off the Dublin train in Belfast.

    - It was supposedly the most sacred part of the mass… Transubstantiation.
That particular moment is a bit difficult for me to explain. The only I surely know is that when bread and wine are turned into the body and blood of Christ it is a religious ritual. Nowadays in our Churches we eat such bread after the sacrament.

  2. 5. In my opinion, this situation characterize her as a person who loves loneliness and silence. Because when she tried to get back to sleep she imagined empty rooms with its furniture, its draperies etc. Her imagination was disturbing. And it`s clear because of her father`s death, terrible relationship with her mother. So, she became a very private girl I think. And if I were her I wouldn`t think negatively. I would try to avoid bad thoughts, try to make things right with my mother. Yes, it would be very hard but the character`s behavior wasn`t right. We have one life. And in any case it make sense. Everything depends on us...

This statement can characterize Catherine as a very dramatic person ,I think that it is connected with the music. Strong emotions which in such situation was negotiv. Of course she thoughts about her father. We can describe this mood as a motive of Funeral March. So I would try to stay neutral , or create something for me just not to have a time for thinking about it. And try to get more positive vision

    - There was an Irish philosopher, Bishop Berkeley or somebody, who said that things only existed when attention was paid to them. A bit like music. (p.60)
From the point of view of a philistine this statement sounds incorrect. Because it`s a genuine truth that the objects do exist. But the author not only suggests that «no material thing exists», the idea is deeper. The objects around us are not mind-independent, they can`t change themselves. And another important thing that is raised in this statement is that our senses may mislead us. We perceive the subjects and the ideas around us with our senses. And our senses also have basic algorithms how to show us the objects. The idea is that senses shape and transform the world around in an understandable for us way.
And if we are to speak about music, that is also do not exist because it perceives through or minds, senses. We understand music differently. The same composition may make feel temporarily depressed one person and cheer up the other. As a result, I suppose that music and emotions, which it gives us, do not exist and differ from on time to another.

    - …..The condiments of the season. (p.78)
I suppose that it means that drunk people and the drunken state are the condiments of the holidays time. And «condiments» here is the synonym to «common things».

    - It was supposedly the most sacred part of the mass…Transubstantiation. (p.74)
As the Catherine has already mentioned that was the most scared part of a religious ritual for her. People in the church ate bread and drank wine and that helped them to become closer to Christ and the God. That only thing helped them to become pure from sins. That is indeed a very scary transubstantiation.

I would like to explain a meaning of the statement from the text. It is "I stiil am". I suppose, the author wanted to say us to us that the main character did not feel herself comfortable at that moment when she answered it. She did not suit actions which took place. She would have liked to be in Kiev. It was place where all things were all right. Maybe, she had been happy there. I think, when she said "I still am" , she meant that her soul and minds had been in that town. She could not let go it. It`d probably , she did not want to do it but present actions forced her to act such way.

  6. 4. There were a lot of memories in this Part. But to my mind, the most special and important was a day, when she had met her favorite musician- Anatoli Ivanovich Melnichuck. As we know, she is really fond of music and obviously there were some reasons for her to start loving music. Personally I think, that Melnichuck had had no small share in her attitude to music. That trip to Kiev gave her a lot. First of all, it was a new experience, new country, new people . Secondly, she met a one special person whom she had be admiring for a long time. And that one of the best moments of her life. That's why she remembered it, when her father had died. Music was some kind of treatment for her. It helped her when she was sad and driven to despair, as well as it inspired her when she was happy.
